How to Care for Swimwear

Taking proper care of your swimwear can increase its lifespan and the overall quality of it. There are certain dos and don’ts that you should be aware of if you want to make your swimwear last.

Whether it’s a bikini or a swimsuit, try and look after it. There are certain ways of washing your swimwear and drying it that can make a massive difference. Also, choosing which piece of swimwear to wear on certain occasions like hot tubbing can help you avoid disappointment. Here are some swimwear care instructions to help you take better care of your swimsuit.

How to Wash Swimwear

It may be surprising to some, but you should wash your swimwear after every use. Yes, that means even if you were only sunbathing. That is because your sun cream has chemicals that could cause discoloration and leave stains on your swimsuit.

You should always wash it by hand. Fill a tub with cold water and add some neutral detergent or mild hand soap. Leave it to soak for about 30 minutes and then rinse gently. Make sure you don’t apply too much pressure as that could cause damage. It is ideal to rinse your swimsuit with cold water straight after getting out of a swimming pool or a hot tub. However, if you don’t have such an option, try and avoid wrapping it up in your towel. Doing this would lock in the moisture and chemicals such as chlorine in your swimsuit. Another great way to protect your swimwear from fading is by adding a capful of white vinegar. This method is recommended for both worn swimsuits and for brand new ones to get them ready for the harshness of the sun and chlorine.

Drying Your Swimwear

Taking care of your swimwear doesn’t end with washing it correctly. It is also vital that you dry it without causing damage. For starters, avoid drying it in the sun. It can be tempting, especially when you’re on a holiday. However, this can make the swimsuit susceptible to fading and losing its original colour. Also, avoid wringing it as that loosens the fibers in the material and in time, your swimsuit will lose its shape and elasticity.

Instead, place your swimsuit in a dry, shaded place on a dry towel. Use the towel to squeeze out any excess water by pressing on the swimsuit. Avoid the tumble dryer at all costs! It would significantly disfigure your swimwear. As it may take a while for your swimsuit to dry, have a few options ready for rotation.

Another important thing to remember is to avoid sitting on rough surfaces! If you have to sit down while wearing a swimsuit, put a towel underneath. This will protect your swimsuit from possible tears.
